The Power of Plant-based Materials: Ethically Sourced Manufacturing

September 23, 2024

Plastic waste is at the forefront of the environmental conservation discussion. From straws to food packaging, water bottles to shopping bags, there is a push to either eliminate plastic use altogether, or use plastics that are responsibly sourced and that lessen the manufacturer's footprint on the environment.

That's why industry leaders like Bennett Plastics have begun incorporating ethical and environmentally friendly plant-based materials into their injection molding process.

Plant-based Plastics

There are three main bio-derived materials that Bennett Plastics uses for injection molding. They are:

PHA

PLS

Cellulose acetates

PHA, which stands for polyhydroxyalkanoates, comes from the bacteria in fermented sugars. This bacteria forms a naturally occurring type of polyester which is used in a wide range of applications in the manufacturing industry, the medical field, and an emerging utility in bio-derived plastics.

PLA, or polylactic acid, comes from fermented corn starch and acts as a substitute for oil-based plastics rather than a simple component. PLA is a desirable alternative as it is biodegradable over time through industrial composting.

Acetate, or cellulose acetate, is derived from cotton or wood pulp. Acetates have seen industrial use since the mid 1800s when they were used in early photography. In modern plastics, acetates are used as a hypoallergenic plastic material which can be composted after use.

Why Use Plant Based Materials?

Bennett Plastics creates products with the end of their useful life in mind. We are concerned with what happens to our plastics after their job is done. We aim for products that are biodegradable through industrial composting processes or degradable in natural settings such as water or air.

Our business philosophy is meant to minimize the impact that our processes and our products have on the earth. We use renewable resources and implement sustainable practices with the future in mind.

Sustainable Plastics

We believe it is our responsibility to ethically source materials for our injection molding while continuing to craft the products that our customers need. Like everything in business, you need to make an informed choice when selecting a top plastic manufacturing company for your products. Your products are one of the most important aspects of your business, so deciding who to trust with them is a big decision.

When it comes to plastic injection molding, there's room for several errors. Quality issues in plastic injection-molded items range from negligible surface defects to severe problems that affect the performance, safety, as well as function of the final product. Often times, the flaws are linked to the material used, tooling design, molding process, or a combination of all three.

Despite living in the world's greatest nation, it has become tough to find items labeled "Made in America" in recent times. In fact, according to the Washington Post, 98% of shoes worn in the US are made abroad. Then, when you think about plastics, food items, electronics, and a surplus of items used regularly that are made overseas, you may wonder if Americans are producing anything.
