The Relationship Between Plastic Parts and Packaging Products

September 22, 2024

As many industries seek to reduce part costs and use less material overall, plastics manufacturers and designers are working together to apply the skills learned in making packaging products to modifying how parts are made. This approach to injection molding, called thin-wall molding, requires thoughtful design adjustments, specialized processes, and careful selection of plastic resins.

What Is Thin-Wall Injection Molding?

Thin-wall injection molding is a subtype of standard injection molding that's designed to produce thinner, more lightweight parts. Inspired by techniques used to create thin plastic packaging (with walls thinner than 0.025 inch or 0.62 mm), thin wall molding produces parts with much thinner walls compared to their overall size (based on flow length) than with traditional methods. In order to make parts meeting these specifications, molding pressure, molding speed, and cooling rates must be increased, and adjustments made to gating and part ejection.

Advantages of Thin-Wall Molding

Of course, one of the greatest advantages of thin wall molding is creating strong, high performing parts and packaging using less resin. Savings on materials, transportation, and other production costs due to their lighter weight and rapid manufacturing provide additional advantages.

Applications of Thin-Wall Molding

Because the thin wall molding process generates parts and products at or over a specified ratio of flow length to wall thickness, both small and large parts can take advantage of these techniques. Applications for thin wall molding can be found across dozens of industries including:

  • Packaging for produce, baked goods, and other food products
  • Packaging for non-food products
  • Containers, caps, and lids
  • Electronics and cell phone components
  • Medical devices, packaging, and single-use items
  • Consumer products and packaging

Many organizations that use plastic products do not necessarily manufacture them on their own. There are plastic manufacturing companies that offer production services, but don't offer a comprehensive service to create and distribute your product. Like everything in business, you need to make an informed choice when selecting a top plastic manufacturing company for your products. Your products are one of the most important aspects of your business, so deciding who to trust with them is a big decision.

When it comes to plastic injection molding, there's room for several errors. Quality issues in plastic injection-molded items range from negligible surface defects to severe problems that affect the performance, safety, as well as function of the final product. Often times, the flaws are linked to the material used, tooling design, molding process, or a combination of all three.

Despite living in the world's greatest nation, it has become tough to find items labeled "Made in America" in recent times. In fact, according to the Washington Post, 98% of shoes worn in the US are made abroad. Then, when you think about plastics, food items, electronics, and a surplus of items used regularly that are made overseas, you may wonder if Americans are producing anything.
