Most Commonly Used Types of Plastic
With so many plastic products playing important roles in our daily lives, it's hard to believe that just a handful of different types of plastic make up the majority of what we encounter each day. Five of the most common types can be easily identified by their recycling identification numbers.
1. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET or PETE)
Probably the most widely used plastic, polyester-based PET plastic is a crystal clear material used for food containers and beverage bottles, as well as microfiber and polar fleece materials.
2. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
Strong and durable, HDPE is often used when plastics need to be tougher, such as chemical or cleaner bottles, shopping and storage bags, safety helmets, patio furniture, milk crates and jugs, and even playground equipment.
3. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
A slightly less durable cousin of HDPE, flexible LDPE plastic is everywhere, from all types of bags and packing materials to stretch wrap, and all kinds of injection molded products and components.
4. Polypropylene (PP)
A favorite for injection molding, polypropylene is clear, durable, heat-tolerant, and is commonly used in packing tape, microwavable food containers, storage bins, and medical equipment.
5. Polystyrene (PS)
Commonly used for disposable dishes and silverware, polystyrene is also frequently used for CD cases, model kits, and laboratory containers. In its expanded form, more commonly known by the brand name Styrofoam, polystyrene is popular in packaging, disposable cups, insulation panels, and other foam products.
