Designing Your Products for Manufacturability
In the crucial design phase of developing your product, it's important to pay attention to its ease of manufacturing. Making some thoughtful decisions at this early stage can save you time and money by simplifying production and ensuring your product can be made as efficiently as possible.
Mold Design & Part Geometry
The simpler the mold design, the more efficient the production runs will be. Of course, the complex requirements of your product may require a more complex mold.
Undercuts
Undercut hollows for latches, clips, and barb fittings can complicate ejecting a part from the mold. Consider adding tapered edges (draft angles) to simplify production.
Flexible Hinges
Bending hinges (aka living hinges) don't work well with some plastic materials, so ensure your design and chosen materials are compatible.
Writing & Symbols
Very small, detailed writing and symbols work best with sans-serif fonts and raised letters. They should also be tapered and use rounded corners when possible for easy ejection from molds.
Flow of Plastic
In injection molding, plastic enters through a "gate" and flows to fill the mold cavities. Sharp angles and thin sections can result in blockages and warping if the melted plastic can't flow through at an appropriate rate. The flow should start at the thickest areas and move into the thinnest spaces. The related process of part ejection is equally important, making sure your part can be easily removed from the mold without additional steps if possible.
Types of Plastic
Choosing the right blend of plastic for your product is absolutely essential. Every polymer offers variations in strength, elasticity, flow rate, shrink rate, environmental and appropriate usage, so you'll want to work with a team who can help you choose the best material for your product so your end product meets your specifications.
In injection molding, every part of the process, from part and mold design to material choice and cooling strategy works together to achieve a consistent, precise result. At Bennett Plastics we have the experience and skills to make your product a reality. Contact us today to see how we can help manufacture your plastic parts.
