For materials to be considered sustainable, they are generally easily recycled/biodegradable, made from renewable materials, or both. Naturally, packaging materials must also be compatible with their contents and function as required.

Some biopolymers, such as PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate), can perform well when heated, making them great choices for heatable food packaging.

PHA and a few other biopolymers are more tolerant of UV exposure if that is a requirement of your packaging.
