Compostable & Sustainable Eco-Friendly Packaging

September 23, 2024

Many people think of plastic as being incompatible with the environment, but that is just not the case today. Sustainable plastics are a thoughtful choice for packaging, combining the convenience and protection of plastics with the environmentally smart options of recycled plastics and bioplastics. Bennett Plastics is committed to providing eco-friendly options with compostable, degradable, bio-filled, and recycled plastics for your packaging needs.

Bioplastics

Bio-based plastics are made from renewable, biological sources rather than non-renewable petroleum sources.

  • Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) - PHA is produced from sugar, glucose, or vegetable oils which are fermented with certain bacteria. Unlike many other bioplastics, PHA tolerates heat well, making it an excellent choice for packaging which can also be used to heat food, and related convenience packaging. Because PHA is not affected by UV light exposure and is also moisture and odor resistant, it's a great choice for food and cosmetics packaging.
  • Polylactic Acid (PLA) - PLA is derived from corn, sugarcane, or sugar beets, and can generally be used in the same places a PET plastic can be used. It is commonly used to make bottle packaging for foods and disposable flatware. It is a heat-sensitive plastic, but is a great choice for deli containers, clamshell boxes of salads, and similar cold product uses.

Biodegradable and Degradable Plastics

Biodegradable and degradable plastics are those which break down naturally (via microorganisms like bacteria and fungi) or which will break down with the aid of some processing such as high temperatures. Because they will decompose, they are a good choice for single-use packaging.

Bio-Filled Plastics

The manufacture of bio-filled plastics replaces some non-renewable components of the plastic with natural, organic fibers such as ground nut shells, paper pulp, wood fibers, and ground coconut shells. Hemp-based bioplastics can also be created in the same manner. Bio-filled plastics reduce the amount of non-renewable resources used in the plastic's manufacturing, and can be used in place of traditional plastics in almost all injection molded packaging needs.

Recycled Plastics

Familiar to almost everyone, recycled plastics are an important step to reducing our reliance on single-use plastics. They can also provide a more environmentally-friendly source material for injection-molded plastic packaging. Post-consumer recycled plastic is frequently used in such injection molded packaging as food bottles and jars, shampoo and cleaner bottles, and butter tubs and milk jugs.

Consumers are eager to see fewer single-use plastics and more biodegradable and compostable plastics both in their products and in that packaging. From our reuse of rainwater and recycling of plastics and corrugated materials, to our minimum-waste design and manufacturing processes, Bennett Plastics offers eco-friendly options for your plastic manufacturing needs.
